KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Due to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts 2020 High School Area Show is being hosted online.
Over 300 works were submitted by students from various high schools in grades 9-12, with 101 works of art were accepted for this year’s exhibition. According to officials, work was submitted from students in Allegan, Barry, Berrien, Branch, Calhoun, Cass, Kalamazoo, St. Joseph and Van Buren counties.
All students who submitted work have the chance to qualify for various college scholarships.
Each college and university selects their scholarship recipients and determines the scholarship amount. Over $500,000 in scholarships will be awarded to high school artists.
The Institute lists the following schools as participants of the scholarship program:
- Cleveland Institute of Art
- College for Creative Studies (Detroit)
- Indiana University South Bend
- KVCC Center for New Media
- Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University
- KIA Kirk Newman Art School
- Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design
- Olivet College
- University of Michigan – Stamps School of Art and Design
- Wayne State University
- Western Michigan University Gwen Frostic School of Art
High School Area Show participants who live in the 6th Congressional District can also submit one of their works to be considered for the annual 6th Congressional Art Competition. One work of art will be selected by U.S Representative Fred Upton’s office to hang for 1 year in the U.S. Capitol as part of the national Congressional Art Competition.
The winner of this competition will receive free airfare for two to Washington, D.C. and an invitation to the Artist Reception. The winner of this competition has been selected as Ashley Blough from Lakeshore High School.
