DOWAGIAC, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Cass County Sheriff’s Department rescued a young boy from the Dowagiac River Saturday afternoon.
According to Sheriff Richard Behnke, the 8-year-old boy was kayaking with his mother on the river near Arthur Dodd Memorial Park when fast moving water and high water levels resulted in his watercraft tipping over.
Authorities responded to the scene around 4:25 p.m. and discovered the victim hanging onto a submerged tree.
He was safely rescued and taken to a Niles hospital for minor injuries.
Officers reported that the pair were properly wearing Coast Guard approved flotation devices while on the river.
