BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Battle Creek Police are investigating after an abandoned factory caught on fire and a group of children were reportedly seen running from the structure at the time of the incident.
It occurred at a vacant factory on Fonda Avenue near Kenosha Avenue, east of I-194 around 9 p.m. Thursday.
When firefighters arrived they saw black smoke and flames coming from the roof of an elevator shaft at the abandoned factory.
Due to the condition of the building, a defensive fire position was initially established. The blaze was extinguished in 40 minutes and no injuries were reported.
Investigators are calling the fire suspicious and the cause is still unknown. The Battle Creek Police Department says they received a report that children were seen running from the structure at the time of alarm. It’s unclear if that’s connected.
