PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The City of Portage has announced that the Spring Cleanup Program is running behind schedule.
Officials say that Waste Management attributes the delay to staffing issues amid the COVID-19 pandemic and an increased amount of material being collected.
Residents are asked to place their unwanted household materials at the curb by 7 a.m. on their designated collection date. Materials may be placed at curbside up to three days prior to each pickup.
To view a collection map and program details, residents can visit portagemi.gov/283. Officials add that only one collection will take place in each neighborhood zone.
The collection of unwanted household materials began Monday, June 1 and will end on Thursday, July 2.
The Spring Cleanup Program is not performed for commercial establishments, churches or schools or on private streets.
The program can be conducted on private streets, but only after every property owner on the private street has signed an indemnification form. Citizens on private streets can contact the Department of Public Works at (269) 329-4444 with any questions concerning collection on private streets.
City officials are also reminding citizens about the rules and regulations that come with the program:
- The City of Portage has no responsibility for items removed from the curbside by private parties.
- Materials may be placed at curbside up to 3 days prior to pickup date.
- Collection will occur only once in each zone.
- All items at the curb will be collected – please watch children’s toys.
- Please separate trash and metals at the curb.
Items that are eligible for collection:
- Bed springs and mattresses.
- Metal – piled separately – will be collected.
- Old appliances, including washers, dryers, stoves, and hot water heaters will be collected.
- Lawn/yard equipment – drained of oil and fuel.
- Other items must be bundled, bagged or boxed. Each package should weigh less than 50 pounds.
Items that are NOT eligible:
- Animal waste
- Brush or leaves (see reverse page)
- Household garbage
- Gas or fuel containers
- Large auto parts
- Paint and chemicals
- Railroad ties
- TV’s, Computers & monitors
- Tires
- Sand, gravel or sod
- Broken concrete
- Scrap building materials from demolition, construction or remodeling
- Refrigerators, air conditioners and dehumidifiers
For materials that are not eligible for this collection, residents are encouraged to contact the Kalamazoo County Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Program for disposal. The hotline number is 269-373-5211.
