DOWAGIAC, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Dowagiac Fire Department is reporting that no injuries were sustained in a house fire that took place Monday.
Around 4:18 p.m., both the Dowagiac Fire Department and the Wayne Township Fire Department were dispatched to East Division Street on the call of the house fire.
First arriving Dowagiac Police officers reported smoke visible from the upper floor of the house. All occupants were out of the structure when they arrived.
Dowagiac Fire and Wayne Township Fire arrived on scene and the fire was extinguished 11 minutes later. The building was ventilated and verified that no further fire conditions existed.
There was fire and smoke damage to the upper floor bedroom area of the structure. Further investigation revealed that a small child had been upstairs and was playing with a lighter and a pile of clothing caught on fire. The child ran downstairs and the owner of the residence heard a smoke alarm, smelled smoke and got everyone out of the house.
The house was not insured.
No injuries were reported by any occupants of the house or the responding firefighters.
The Dowagiac Fire Department released the following statement:
“The Dowagiac Fire Department would like to take this opportunity to remind those adults who have smoking materials, matches and lighters around the residence to keep them out of the reach of children and discuss fire safety with them.”
