KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo Public Safety officers are identifying the victim killed in a recent house fire and say the cause was due to “an unsafe smoking incident.”
The fire broke out Saturday, June 6th at a multi-unit apartment building in the 300 block of Elm Street at the corner of West Kalamazoo Avenue in the city’s Stuart Neighborhood.
First responders say 53-year-old William Cavender was found and removed from the residence during a search and rescue operation, but he later was pronounced dead.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety’s Fire Marshal Office and Criminal Investigations Division completed their investigation and say “an unsafe smoking incident” started the fire in the victim’s apartment, but no other details were released.
