PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The City of Portage has announced that its Mill & Fill program will be starting this week.
The Mill & Fill Program consists of major maintenance to select streets to improve structural integrity and ride quality, as well as to prolong the life of the road. These improvements include the removal of badly worn areas of the road and overlaying the surface with 1.5 inches of new asphalt.
The city has contracted with Reith-Riley Construction of Kalamazoo to perform the 2020 Mill & Fill project, which is scheduled to begin on June 18. The project is expected to be complete on June 19, weather permitting.
The following locations are scheduled:
- Oakland Drive (Shaver Road – West Osterhout Avenue)
- Mandigo Avenue (Andrews Street – Autumn View Lane)
During paving operations, one lane of travel will remain open at all times. Residents are advised that a “tac coat” (oily substance) is sprayed on the street prior to paving in order to bond the new asphalt to the old surface. Driving on the tac coat should be avoided; this material may attach to tires and vehicle undercarriages and be carried onto driveways or garage floors.
All private vehicles should be removed from the roadway during the project. Motorists are urged to drive with caution in this area and slow down for the safety of construction workers and other drivers.
