ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — After controversy over a drunk driving arrest, St. Joseph County’s long-time Prosecutor has been defeated in the Republican race of Michigan’s Primary Election.
Unofficial results as of 12 a.m. Wednesday show Republican David Marvin beat out John McDonough with 7,994 votes, more than four times as many as the former Prosecutor, with McDonough only having 1,735 votes. There is no Democratic opponent.
40-year-old McDonough held office in St. Joseph County for nearly 12 years and was first elected to the role in 2008.
Back on May 11th, McDonough was arrested after he crashed his car into a residential fence on the 17000 block of Lovers Lane in Lockport Township.
He was later arrested and taken to the St. Joseph County Jail for operating while under the influence of alcohol and for having open intoxicants in his vehicle.
However, a 911 call McDonough made to dispatchers that night had him claiming the crash was caused by a coughing fit.
After the incident, a group of state representatives and leaders in St. Joseph and Branch counties asked for the resignation of the St. Joseph County Prosecutor, but commissioners said they were unable to ask for McDonough to step down because doing so is banned by state law.
According to MLive, 45-year-old Marvin, a Three Rivers native, is a defense attorney in the area and a former partner at Hines and Marvin PC. He graduated from Michigan State University’s College of Law.
