KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo Promise is helping Promise recipients who may be altering their college plans due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In a Facebook Post, officials with the Kalamazoo Promise announced on Monday that the full-time aid requirement at a post-secondary institution will be waived for the school year, largely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
All schools partnering with the program have been notified already, officials said.
Despite the waiver, the organization is still encouraging full-time enrollment for qualifying students where applicable.
“We know many of you will be able to maintain your full-time status and encourage you to do so; however, if taking fewer courses is helpful, we hope you will take advantage of this change,” officials said. “We believe that it is best to stay engaged in pursuing your education at a reduced rate rather than pausing. We also encourage you to consult financial aid at your school to understand how going to less than full-time impacts your other financial aid.”
Additionally, students planning to transfer to a different school this fall will need to fill out a new Scholarship Acceptance Form for that school. The form can be found at this link.
Officials with the Kalamazoo Promise are reminding students and parents that this only applies to students enrolled using their promise scholarship at a post-secondary institution for this school year.
The Kalamazoo Promise was launched in November of 2005 and has been funded by a group of anonymous donors to cover tuition for post-secondary education at trade schools, colleges, and universities across Michigan for eligible KPS graduates.
