BATTLE CREEK (WKZO AM/FM) — Battle Creek officials say a faulty kitchen appliance was most likely the cause of late night apartment fire but working smoke alarms woke up and saved nearby residents.
Firefighters were called to a possible structure fire on south 24th Street just after midnight Monday night and saw flames coming out of the first-floor apartment window.
They quickly extinguished the blaze and looked for victims but nobody was inside the unit at the time.
Neighbors evacuated when they heard the fire alarms and investigators say a faulty cooking appliance in the kitchen pantry area most likely sparked the blaze.
There were no reports of injuries.
