KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo City Commission has voted to assume ownership and control of the Major State-owned streets downtown, and it could lead to changes as big as installing the Kalamazoo Mall back in the 50’s.
Commissioner Don Cooney says taking on the ownership of Michigan and Kalamazoo Avenues and Park and Westnedge means they take on the costs and he voted no.
He said 2-way streets is not what we should be investing our money in when 34% of people are living in poverty.
City Commissioner Dave Anderson admitted it was a risk but says cities are popular again, and they are in the process of building a great city, so it’s worth trying.
No decisions have been made, but eliminating one way streets is one option.
Certainly slowing traffic through the downtown will be the main goal. Those details may be hammered out in the coming year.
