PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — UPDATE: Monday, the Portage Department of Public Safety announced that two recently-found bodies have been identified as a couple who went missing in Portage last week.
Previously, Gary and Laura Johnson had been announced as missing after not reporting to work for a few days. A search of their property showed signs of violence inside, and Laura Johnson’s vehicle was missing.
Her vehicle was later recovered at the Milham Meadows apartment building, where they also found the couple’s 27-year-old son Nicholas Johnson, a known
parole absconder.
He is currently in custody on unrelated outstanding warrants. A judge set his bond at $100,000, partly due to the circumstances of his parents’ disappearance.
Later, police discovered two bodies at the Gourdneck State Game Area. They announced Monday that the bodies had been confirmed as the missing couple.
As a result, police are now treating the case as a homicide. A cause of death was not immediately made available.
Meanwhile, Nicholas Johnson is being treated as a person of interest in the matter.
According to a report from WOOD TV on Monday, Johnson is also a person of interest in a 2018 case involving the disappearance of a teenager from Gobles.
This is an ongoing case and will be updated as more information becomes available.
In a related matter, area residents were reported to be leaving bouquets of flowers at the Johnson residence over the weekend. More information on that story can be found here.
