KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Almost everything is closed or cancelled again today because of this incredibly cold weather.
— CLOSINGS AND CANCELLATIONS —
Western Michigan University, KVCC and Kalamazoo College have all cancelled classes, public schools are closed and so are private ones. A full list of closings can always be found on our website.
Michigan State Government and a lot of local governments are down to essential personnel only.
Social Security and Secretary of State Offices are closed and while postal stations are open, there will be no delivery for a second day.
Many flights are cancelled because ground crews can’t work on the planes. Driving around can be a nightmare and Amtrak has packed it in.
— TRACKS ON FIRE? —
You may have heard that they were setting the tracks on fire in Chicago to try to keep the trains rolling.
Apparently they begin to warp and crack in temperatures this cold, but they can’t set all the tracks ablaze and so Amtrak has shut down the Wolverine, the Pere Marquette and the Blue Water lines for now.
— METRO TRANSIT HERE TO HELP —
One service that has continued with only a few problems has been Kalamazoo’s Metro Transit service.
The road conditions may be slowing them a little but fewer people need lifts so they are making fewer stops and maintaining their schedule.
They have received fewer calls for their on demand service the “Metro Connect.”
