KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo City Commissioners will meet tonight to finalize rate hikes for water and wastewater utilities that will raise the price of water in the city.
Customers in the city will bear almost the entire brunt of the water increases which average out to 4% because most of the added expenses and infrastructure improvements, replacing lead pipes and broken mains will be taking place inside the city.
Utilities Director James Baker says city customers will see rates increase 8.7% or just under $2/month. Customers outside the city will see their rates remain essentially flat.
For wastewater, rates will go up nearly 6% inside the city and nearly 7-1/2 percent outside the city, if Commissioners approve the new rates this evening.
