KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — A Kalamazoo woman is dead after a fire in her two story home on Denner Street
Public Safety was dispatched to the West Douglas neighborhood early Tuesday morning and were told that the 65-year-old woman may still be inside.
Heavy smoke was already coming from the home and attempts to rescue the woman were turned back by the collapse of the first floor and severe hoarding, which made it difficult to move around inside.
They recovered her body later after bringing the fire under control.
Her name is being withheld until family is notified.
The severe cold and frozen fire hydrants hampered their efforts to fight the blaze.
One Public Safety officer suffered a minor injury but refused treatment.
The Fire Marshall is now investigating the cause of the fatal fire which began in the basement.
