KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — If you see smoke rising from the area near the BTR Park on Kalamazoo’s southwest side today, don’t be alarmed.
WMU plans to do a controlled burn today at the Asylum Lake Preserve right across the street.
Steve Keto, the man in charge of preserving the natural wonders on WMU property says that such fires used to occur naturally, set off by lightning or native Americans.
They do it today to maintain natural species that have evolved to survive such fires, and to get rid of invasive species that have not.
If the conditions are right, professional contractors will burn off 30-acres at Parkview and Drake today.
A second smaller burn is planned for next month on another section of the property.
