LANSING, MI — Whether the governor finally bowed to pressure and lawsuits may never be known, but Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has now lifted the ban on indoor contact sports in the Michigan.
The governor and Health and Human Services Director Elizabeth Hertel made the announcement Thursday afternoon.
In addition to additional testing for athletes, Hertel says attendance will be limited to a pair of spectators per athlete. She adds the decision to open winter sports weeks earlier than had been planned was due to the recommendation from state chief medical executive Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, who noted the trend in new cases continues to move downward and hospitals are not overwhelmed.
Whitmer said the large rally Saturday at the Capitol in Lansing and a lawsuit had no impact on the decision, adding it was science-based.
