KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Participants and race officials are mourning the loss of an elderly runner during Sunday’s Borgess Run for the Health of It.
76-year-old Kay Caskey collapsed about 3/4ths of a mile into the 10K run, along Gull Road due to some type of medical issue.
Medical workers along the route quickly arrived and rushed her to the hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
Caskey was a Western Michigan University professor, climbed mountains in her 60’s, stayed active, and taught the elderly how to keep their sense of humor as one way of improving their health.
The exact cause of death has not been released.
Over 7,500 participants took to the streets of Kalamazoo over the weekend which included the Kid’s Fun Run and Motivational Mile on Friday and the 5K, 10K, half marathon, and full marathon on Sunday at the Nazareth Campus.
