PORTAGE (WKZO AM/FM) — It started as a collegiate project, to design a football helmet that could measure and record the shocks and bumps that a player was encountering during a game.
It came about the time that real concern was rising about the long term effects of repeated concussions suffered by athletes.
Dr. Binu Baby Narakathu was still a student at the time. Now he is a start-up entrepreneur with space at the Michigan Small Business Development Center at the BTR Park, trying to get his product off the ground.
They just were named a 2019 SmartZone Best Small Business Honoree in Lansing.
They hope to market the helmet as a tool that coaches can use to monitor the impacts a player suffers during practice, and teach them techniques that can help them avoid injuries.
