HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — National Weather Service meteorologists in Grand Rapids are looking for help assessing where the ice is along West Michigan waterways.
They put out a call to action on Twitter, asking people who live near rivers to snap a photo of what river ice looks like near them — and share to the weather service’s social media pages. They are looking for new ways to predict ice jams to limit the damage caused by build ups.
In the NWS tweet, they asked, “Do you live near a river? We’re trying to get a feel for how much ice has already formed in our rivers, since we’re expecting a whole lot of new ice in the next week or so. Help us out by snapping a photo and sharing it with us! #wmiwx #miwx #CitizenScience“
Across the state, Coast Guard ice breakers are working to clear ice dams on the St. Clair River, causing flooding in East China Township in St. Clair County.
They’re trying to protect area homes from being flooded in the near future.
