BALTIMORE TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Emmett Township Public Safety officers are releasing more details on a multi-county car chase that ended in the death of a Kalamazoo man.
First responders were called to the 900 block of East Michigan Avenue near North Raymond Road just before 4:30 p.m. Sunday and found a 45-year-old man slumped over the wheel.
As officers approached the driver, he fled the scene, struck one of the Lifecare medics, and threw what was believed to be controlled substances from the vehicle.
The chase continued through Battle Creek and into Barry County near Hastings until the suspect was taken into custody on M-37 near Lawrence Road in Baltimore Township.
Authorities say the man then started to show signs of a medical issue and went into cardiac arrest while in the ambulance.
CPR was initiated but it was unsuccessful and the man was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Afterwards, several packages of methamphetamine were recovered.
Michigan State Police are now investigating the incident and an autopsy has been ordered.
It is believed that drugs and/or alcohol may have been a factor.
