KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo City Commissioners have narrowed down their list of potential candidates for their vacan seat from 15 to 5.
The applicants moving forward are Patrese Griffin, Megan Buwalda, Esteven Juarez, John McNeill and William Wells.
Commissioners voted on the list of 15 and took the top candidates with Griffin receiving 6 votes, Buwalda 5, Juarez 4, and both McNeill and Wells getting 3 votes each.

A special meeting will now be held on June 10th at 6 p.m. to interview the top 5 and pick their next commissioner.

KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo City Commissioners are expected to go through 15 applications at their Monday night meeting, hoping to find the right candidate to fill their vacant seat.
This comes after former Commissioner Shannon Sykes-Nehring moved out of Kalamazoo and resigned from her position.
The 15 applicants are: Amber Beckett, Megan Buwalda, Patrese Griffin, Oliver Howell, Esteven Juarez, Peter Kushner, John McNeill, Lucas Middleton, Nathan Moore, Brian Pittelkow, James Pitts, Tami Rey, Nehemiah Scudder, Yvonne Smith, and William Wells.
Their current positions/specialties range from scientists, professors, postal carriers, attorneys, pastors, journalists, entrepreneurs, other local officials, etc.
Mayor Bobby Hopewell says he hopes to narrow the field tonight and then hold interviews of the remaining applicants during their June 10th special meeting, with the goal of choosing their next commissioner that night.
