COOPER TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Today marks 3-years since Kalamazoo’s bike tragedy.
On June 7th 2016, 5 cyclists were killed and 4 others were injured near Markin Glen Park when 50-year-old suspect Charles Pickett Jr., who was high on prescription pain-killers, swerved into members of the Chain Gang Bike Club.
Those victims were 53-year-old Debra Bradley, 42-year-old Melissa Hughes, 73-year-old Fred Nelson, 74-year-old Lorenz Paulik, and 56-year-old Suzanne Sippel.
Now the group holds a 28-mile memorial ride, which took place on Tuesday, on that same route.
They take time to stop at the memorial sculpture that was unveiled last year on North Westnedge Avenue in Cooper Township.
Bike racks, a repair station and benches are expected to be added to the memorial and completed this summer.
