KALAMAZOO TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — An investigation is underway after a fire at a church in Kalamazoo Township.
Firefighters were called to Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church on Cherry Hill Street just after 5:30 p.m. Monday and blocked off the street for several hours as they battled the blaze.
“Upon arrival, we had fire coming out of both the north and south end of the church,” Fire Marshall of Kalamazoo Township Todd Kowalski said. “Fire crews were met by heavy fire, we ended up defensive, which is exterior firefighting only, for a great period of time. We’ve got some structural issues right now, collapse issues we’re trying to deal with.”
Nobody was inside the church at the time and no injuries were reported.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was also investigating on site.
“It’s a church, so it falls under Federal,” Kowalski said.
Authorities closed off Kendall Avenue and diverted traffic as they extinguished the fire. They’ll continue to look into the exact cause.
“At this point, we have no cause yet,” Kowalski added.
