KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A newly appointed Kalamazoo City Commissioner is already planning her run to keep her seat.
On Monday, Vice chair of the Fair Housing Center of Southwest Michigan and Commissioner Patrese Griffin announced that she will run for the city commission during the fall election.
Griffin was previously appointed to the commission last month, after Shannon Sykes-Nehring resigned from the board.
During her interview Griffin explained that her experience in housing gave her a better understanding of citizen needs.
“I am this community,” She said in her opening monologue, “I speak for those who can’t speak for themselves. I speak for those who rarely get heard, and I speak for those who don’t even know they have a voice.”
Three 4-year commission seats will expire and be up for grabs this year: Commissioner David Anderson, Commissioner Don Cooney, and Shannon Sykes-Nehring’s former seat now held by Griffin.
She will hold her kickoff rally Thursday at Factory Coffee on East Frank Street beginning at 6 p.m.
