YANKEE SPRINGS TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A 66-year-old woman is dead after she jumped into a Barry County Lake without a life jacket.
Marine deputies and dive teams were called to Gun Lake in Yankee Springs Township around 7 p.m. Thursday where they found a woman’s body in the water.
Officials say the victim was on a pontoon boat with her 3 grandchildren when a lid from a container flew into the water and she jumped in to try to retrieve it, but the wind pushed the boat away from her.
The children attempted to throw a life jacket to save her, but it was too late.
They called for help and nearby boaters helped get the children back to shore.
UPDATE: The woman who drowned in Gun Lake Thursday is being identified as 66-year-old Laura Smith of Middleville.
