KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A woman is dead and a Kalamazoo man is in custody after a shooting on the city’s Northside.
Public Safety officers were called to a home in the 1300 block of North Church Street near West Paterson Street around 12:30 p.m. Monday where they found a 33-year-old woman inside a kitchen with a gunshot wound to her chest.
She was rushed to Bronson Methodist where she was later pronounced dead.
The suspect, a 36-year-old man was found on the front porch of the home and admitted to the killing.
He was booked into the Kalamazoo County Jail on an open murder charge.
Officers have not identified the victim at this time but Commissioner Stephanie Moore has came out saying the woman was Shequita Lewis, who sought the Democratic nomination for the District 4 seat on the Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners last year.
An autopsy will be conducted while investigators continue to look into the incident.
