KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo Central High School will be getting fully renovated baseball and softball fields thanks to a local alumnus and professional baseball player.
The Derek Jeter Turn 2 Foundation has announced that they will fund the 3.2-million dollar project that will provide the new and improved synthetic turf fields as well as brand new seating, press boxes, dugouts, and more, located at the Derek Jeter Field Complex.
In a statement Jeter said, “Growing up playing baseball in Kalamazoo is how I realized my passion for the game, and it’s where I began the road to pursuing my dreams of playing professionally. This project is very special to me, and I’m excited to work with the community to create an environment that will inspire local youth to work hard to achieve their full potential and accomplish their goals.”
Miami Marlins part-owner and CEO Derek Jeter graduated from Kalamazoo Central in 1992.
Field construction is expected to begin at the end of the 2020 baseball and softball seasons with the goal of completing the project by late spring of 2021.
