LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Former Michigan House Speaker Joe Tate is not seeking a fifth term.
The Detroit Democrat was House Speaker in 2023 and 2024 and was the first Black Speaker of the House.
Tate was eligible for the fifth term after voters approved a law allowing lawmakers to serve a maximum of 12-years in either the House or Senate, up from three two-year terms in the House and two four-year terms in the Senate.
Current House Speaker Matt Hall, a Republican from Richland, says he is “disappointed” that Tate is not seeking reelection and says he is “a nice, humble and patient person who was generous with his time.”
