KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo city commissioners are expected to approve a plan to put Howard Street on a road diet and improve a school crossing to the Maple Street Magnet School, even though the design has drawn fire from Vine neighborhood parents and students.
They have complained that the current crossing isn’t safe, and the changes that are being proposed may be more dangerous.
In a memo, Kalamazoo road engineer Dennis Randolph says new discussions have been held with residents, and more are planned on the final design for that school crossing and if they agree changes are required, there could be a change-order issued before construction begins.
A plan to change Howard from four lanes to just two with a center passing lane will go forward this year, if approved tonight.
