LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Mar. 12, 2026) – Energy was on the mind of majority Republicans in the state House on Wednesday.
Speaker Matt Hall used his weekly press briefing to spotlight efforts to repeal legislation, signed into law three years ago, to require electricity providers to run completely on clean energy sources by 2040. The Richland Republican believes that entities which received $2.1 million in grants, targeted by the state’s Utility Consumers Participation Board in 2024, were using the money more for promoting a social position rather than focusing on lowering utility rates.
A spokeswoman for the Michigan Environmental Council, one of those entities funded by these grants, told MIRS News that, in a report by the UCPB two years ago, these groups saved utility customers nearly $600 million dollars through their direct advocacy, and that renewable energy is much cheaper than gas and coal.
The “Project Lighthouse” legislative package, put forward by Watervliet Republican Pauline Wendzel, is currently before the House Energy Committee, of which she is the chair.
