PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County state Representative Matt Longjohn says two bills have been introduced in the legislature to make sure Flock camera security systems are being used properly.
Activist groups are concerned the license plate readers could be used by federal agencies to find immigrants they want to deport, track women seeking abortions, and to monitor the activity of opponents and dissidents.
Longjohn says the legislation is bipartisan and should establish uniform limits on what the data can be used for.
Longjohn told the Portage City Council this week that one bill he is co-sponsoring would deal with private license plate readers used by businesses and the other would deal with public systems.
The bills have been proposed, but Longjohn says no hearings have been scheduled, the bills may still be amended and there are no guarantees that they will pass.
There are currently 110 pole mounted cameras located strategically along major roads, operated by municipal and township police agencies and the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office.
