KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – With recent warmer temperatures, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says it has seen a rise in calls regarding residential gas meters damaged by falling ice.
They say the damage has been limited to gas meters, all of which have been made safe by KDPS and Consumers Energy personnel.
According to a KDPS release, falling ice from roofs can create a dangerous situation. Ice dams and large icicles can weigh hundreds of pounds. As roofs warm faster than the ice, these formations can suddenly detach, striking gas meters and other utilities below.
KDPS is recommending that residents and landlords inspect homes and businesses for ice
hazards. Prevention is the safest approach. If a gas meter is located under a large ice formation, consider installing a protective shield.
If you notice a damaged gas meter or smell natural gas, call 911 immediately. KDPS personnel are equipped with gas detectors and will coordinate with Consumers Energy to
safely identify and remedy any gas leaks.
