KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A fisherman who fell through the ice on a lake in Kalamazoo Wednesday is alive and recovering thanks to the quick action of Kalamazoo Public Safety officers.
It happened near the 3700 block of Greenleaf Circle just before noon, and he was trapped about 100 yards from shore.
The 63-year-old man was found in shoulder-deep water holding himself up on unstable ice.
The Technical Rescue Team from Station 6 was called to be able to reach the man as the ice was too thin to have more than one officer on the ice.
The man is hospitalized and is expected to make a full recovery. Public Safety officials add that his determination and will to survive also played a role in his safe recovery.
EO Tech Aaron DeWaal pulled the man to shore with the help of onshore officers and met with the man in the hospital.
