BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A portion of a commercial building on Surby Avenue in Battle Creek was destroyed after a vehicle inside the building caught fire.
Friday at 8:57 p.m., the Battle Creek Fire Department responded to a reported vehicle fire inside a detached residential garage. Upon arrival, crews discovered a fully involved vehicle fire inside a large commercial building.
The fire was brought under control in about 40 minutes, with crews remaining on scene for nearly three hours to complete overhaul.
The Battle Creek Fire Department says firefighting efforts were hampered by cold temperatures and heavy contents inside the building.
One firefighter sustained a minor injury from a slip and fall.
The rear of the building was a total loss, with the structure loss listed at $928,350.00, and the contents loss at $181,028.00.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
