KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo Public Schools continue to show progress where it counts, literally.
Superintendent Darrin Slade informed trustees Monday night that the district’s latest performance on state math tests showed very positive results.
“In Math, 7 of eight grade levels improved. You don’t see those type of results. Very impressive.”
He says the largest improvements came in the elementary and middle schools, where the numbers exceeded the state average.
“6th graders improved by 4% compared to a 0.5% improvement for the state and we had improvement at the 7th grade level.”
He says that adds up to giving students the lift they will need after graduation to land a good career.
“Science and technology are areas with most of the jobs opening up in the future so we are pushing math very hard in Kalamazoo, the students must have not just basic math skills but advanced math skills if they want to be able to compete.”
Dr. Slade said 8th graders were the only ones who failed to show improvements, but the district will be applying additional assistance and attention to see if they can turn that around second semester.
