DEARBORN, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – AAA is projecting record-breaking travel for the holiday period from December 20th through January 1st in the U.S.
The auto club is predicting 122.4-million Americans will travel at least 50-miles from home, up 2.2% from 2024’s record of 119.7 million.
In Michigan, 3.9-million are projected to be traveling, up 1.8% from last year. Most, 3.5 million, will drive and just over 219,000 will fly to their destination.
AAA says gas prices nationwide are lower than last year and have fallen under $3-per-gallon for the first time in four years. Last Christmas, gas prices in Michigan averaged $3.06. Today, the average is $2.90 in the state and $2.94 nationally.
The top domestic destinations are Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami, Florida followed by Anaheim and Los Angeles, California and Honolulu, Hawaii. The top international destinations are Cancun, Mexico; Punta Cana, Dominican Republic; Cozumel, Mexico; San Jose, Costa Rica; and Puerta Vallarta, Mexico.
