KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – It’s a good weekend to be a Bronco, as the football team plays this Saturday in the Mid-American Conference championship game.
Athletic director Dan Bartholomae told the Western Michigan Universtiy Board of Trustees this week that they have more reasons to celebrate the success of this season.
“We swept the MAC Football Awards. Coach of the year, player of the year, offensive player of the year, defensive player of the year. First time in the history of the league that anybody has swept those,” Bartholomae told the trustees.
He says they aren’t just moving the markers on the playing field, they are also achieving in the classroom.
“We are retaining and graduating our athletes at the highest academic level across our entire conference, our women’s programs came in second so we got some room to improve there.”
The Broncos head into the championship game with the best regular season record in the conference at 7-1, with their only loss was to the Miami of Ohio Redhawks, the team they will meet again this Saturday at Ford Field.
It will be the first time in nine years the Broncos made it to the conference championship. The last time was when former head coach P.J. Fleck led the team to national ranking and a Cotton Bowl appearance.
