KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo city commissioners have approved the first reading on a proposal to rezone land near Asylum Lake for commercial development, but have delayed setting the date for the public hearing.
That’s because they heard from people who attended the last public hearing on this subject, who warned that city commission chambers at City Hall will not be adequate to handle the crowd of opponents who will probably show up.
Dok Tael Stevens and Thomas House told them the entire building was packed, making it uncomfortable for most and impossible for those with disabilities.
Commissioner Chris Praedel agreed.
The original proposal was to hold the public hearing and take a vote on January 26th, and that could still be the date, if staff can find a larger site that is available and can provide all the facilities needed to host a city commission meeting, including live cable and online coverage.
The public hearing will be revisited at the next city meeting on December 15th, when they will be expecting a report from staff on whether a new venue and a new date can be set.
