OSHTEMO TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Oshtemo Township board has voted to enact a one-year moratorium on the development of a commercial battery energy storage system.
NewEdge Renewable Power wants to put lithium ion power along Van Kal Avenue on the Kalamazoo-Van Buren county line and says it would be for extra energy capacity when the power grid faces heavy demand.
Supervisor Cheri Bell says the moratorium is not a solution, but they need time to consult with independent professionals on the benefits and the drawbacks.
The zoning rules in Oshtemo Township currently to not allow battery energy storage use anywhere.
