KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A new pilot program to get Western Michigan University students to downtown Kalamazoo and back will begin soon, to make the trip easier.
The free shuttle service will begin as a pilot with routes on three days: Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday to initially give rides to WMU business students who have internships and other programs at downtown operations. Any other WMU students who need rides can tag along.
Professor Doug Lepisto says they call it the Juice Bus, because that’s just something they say.
He says it was one of the projects of their Leadership and Business Strategy program to solve a real life problem.
WMU president Russ Kavalhuna says they are partnering with the Monroe Brown Foundation, the Hall Foundation for Downtown Initiatives, The United Way, and Sleeping Giant Capital to fund the shuttle.
Vice Mayor Jeanne Hess says it links the city and the students in a new way.
Lepisto says their eventual goal is to expand the shuttle to provide rides daily between the campus and downtown.
WMU students just need to present their student ID to ride free.
Routes and schedules can be found at their website at lbswmu.com/lbs-juice-bus.
