LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The settlement of a federal lawsuit from a discredited sexual abuse investigation has netted a life preserver from the Edmund Fitzgerald for Michigan State Police.
The lawsuit was filed by Larry Orr, accusing a state police officer of violating his rights during the investigation.
He will receive $600,000 from the state, and agreed to give up the artifact from the Lake Superior shipwreck.
Lieutenant David Busacca wanted the life ring included in the settlement, but MSP’s director of communications Shanon Banner says they are not comfortable with the life ring being part of the settlement.
Banner says the intention of the settlement “was always for the historic Michigan artifact to be on long-term loan to Michigan museums.”
