LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Nearly 1.5-million Michiganders are without their SNAP benefits as a result of the federal government shutdown.
The state Department of Health and Human Services says they have been told to hold any future benefits until further notice.
DHHS director Elizabeth Hertel says the impact of homes losing access to their Supplemental Nutrition Assistant Program benefits “will be felt around the state.”
She calls SNAP a “lifeline for many Michigan families,” as it helps put nutritious food on the table and supports local farmers and grocers.
Around 13% of Michigan residents receive SNAP.
