KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A couple of weeks before trick or treaters hit the streets this year, Kalamazoo Public Schools officials will be knocking on doors, combating truancy.
Superintendent Darrin Slade says they have just received the official attendance numbers for the last school year.
“Last year the state improved by 1.6%. Kalamazoo improved by 4.4%. Again we continue to outpace the state in all areas.”
Dr. Slade says one of the strategies they used was going directly to the homes of truants. They know which students are missing classes, their goal is to find out why and to do what they can to remedy the situation.
“We knock, we talk with parents, we tell parents that we really need your students in school, so we’re gonna do one and October, November, December, January February March.”
Slade says he is looking for volunteers from the district staff who want to spend a Saturday with him, working the “Knock and Talk” effort.
