KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County will buy the McDonald’s across the street from the County Administration Building on Kalamazoo Avenue downtown and build a new administration building in its place.
The asking price for the property is $9 million and the price of the building is yet to be determined.
The board went into closed session to discuss the purchase yesterday and came out and authorized Administrator Kevin Catlin to go ahead and buy the site at Kalamazoo and Rose.
He says it will give them the space they need for future growth.
Catlin says rebuilding will be better in the long run than renovating their current home.
The vote was 7 to 2.
Vice chair John Taylor says it wasn’t the cheapest property they considered, but it was the best location.
Commissioner John Gisler disagreed and voted no.
Their current office building would be sold for redevelopment.
The new building would be next to the parking structure that is already under construction for their new courthouse.
It could take years to secure the funding, designs and contracts.
What remains unclear is how long the McDonald’s will stay open.
