KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – It’s the last weekend of summer vacation for public school students in Kalamazoo as classes resume on Monday.
Kalamazoo City Manager Jim Ritsema says the Parks Department has a couple of events planned. A movie will be shown tonight, and they have picked the perfect film to watch outdoors.
The weather looks like it will be good in the park, if not on the screen.
Pre-movie activities start at 6 p.m. with music, free face painting, and free concessions while they last.
The movie on the big LED screen starts at 7 p.m.
Saturday morning the Parks Department will have some aquatic training at the city’s beach for families. They call it “Paddling 101” and it will run from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Both the Friday movie and the Saturday morning kayaking are free events.
There will also be two back-to-school events Saturday in Kalamazoo.
The Northside Ministerial Alliance will once again host their annual Anti-Gun Violence Carnival for folks of all ages from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lincoln Elementary School on Burdick Street.
The Young Kings and Queens Back 2 School Jam will be staged on North Rose Street that afternoon.
Kalamazoo Public Schools spokeswoman Susan Coney says that event will feature food, a musical competition, and a backpack and hygiene pack giveaway.
Superintendent Darrin Slade says he is really impressed by Kalamazoo’s efforts to help students get ready for school.
