KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – It’s ironic, but the water at the Kalamazoo County Health & Community Services Department isn’t safe to drink.
It seems they have been using bottled water since last year.
Last week it was proposed that the county board reallocate $400,000 in unused ARPA funding to fix the copper pipes causing the water problems on Alcott Street.
Commissioner Tammy Ray thought that money should go back to the community, and not fix a maintenance issue.
“This funding came from the disproportionately impacted communities pot and I just feel like we should be putting that money back there I think that we do have other funding if we want to use that to replace the pipes that HCS.”
Other commissioners agreed and rejected the proposal, asking Administrator Kevin Catlin to come back with alternative ideas at their next meeting.
“This is too much copper for EPA regulations,” said Catlin.
The Health & Community Services Department building is one of the remaining structures from the Allied Paper Plant site and was remodeled and repurposed for use by the department. Evidently the plumbing was one of several problems the county has had with the old structure since moving in.
