PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – If there is one thing the city of Portage has plenty of right now its dead trees, as last year’s tornado left tens of thousands of trees ripped apart.
City council member Vic Ledbetter proposed a few months ago that they consider letting local residents bring their chainsaws and harvest them for firewood, but he says he has been told that there are liability concerns with that idea.
He is now proposing an alternative, that the Public Works Department be directed to turn the trees into firewood.
It would create a use for all that dead wood and help the city dispose of all those trees.
Homeowners who live near the decimated stands are concerned about the fire hazard all those dead trees now present.
Ledbetter is asking for a response from city staff on this alternative approach.
