KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – July is Disability Pride Month and Saturday is the anniversary date for the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Kalamazoo has a special reason to mark the occasion this year because a Kalamazoo woman has been named Miss Wheelchair Michigan. Rynita McGuire has a congenital condition that limits the range of motion in her arms and legs.
She endured a rough childhood, homelessness, domestic violence and foster care but she overcame that. She now has a master’s degree, teaches art at KVCC, and is a professional D.J. as well as an advocate for those with disabilities.
McGuire says her win here means she will be representing the state in the Miss Wheelchair U.S.A. pageant in August.
She says about a quarter of the population has some disability, and if we live long enough, all of us do.
She says she would like to see an annual Disability Pride Celebration in Kalamazoo.
McGuire was honored by the Kalamazoo City Commission this week.
