WAYNE COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Wayne County Executive Warren Evans says radioactive waste from the Manhattan Project is not going to be deposited at a Van Buren Township landfill.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have decided to ship that waste to Andrews, Texas.
The metro Detroit landfill is one of just a few sites that can accept nuclear waste.
Evans says he does not envy the community that will receive the radioactive waste from the development of the nuclear bomb during World War Two, but adds it is his job to fight for the people of Wayne County, who did not want the waste in the area.
